POEM

Nourished and content

I sleep with my windows open.

I like my coffee dark.

I drink it

sitting down at the kitchen table.

At dawn.

I love the quiet of morning.

Every sip.

The first songs of the  birds

in my garden.

I grow tomatoes.

In the heat of  summer

I walk daily

along the rows of my tomato plants.

 Barefoot.

The warmth of the earth

 seeps into my bones.

I love to touch

 the warm tomato skin.

Inhale their sweet scent.

Sometimes I talk to them.

I thank them

for their exquisite flavor.

I test their texture

with my fingers.

When it gives enough.

But not too much.

 I get ready.

For canning.

Big barrels full of ripe tomatoes.

Lined up in my patio.

Dancing in boiling water.

Their smell in the breeze.

The sweetness of basil

just picked.

The chatter of my sisters

 and daughters.

The soundscape

 of crickets singing.

The cool mint tea

under the shade of the oak tree.

The white puffy cloud

in the vastness of the blue summer sky.

Dinner outdoors at any given time.

This is my life.

The taste of these late summer days

 melt on my tongue.

during the cold days of winter.

Flow through my body.

Like a  warm embrace.

No heat in the house .

I feel nourished and content.
